On the last day of our family holiday in Italy our route takes us to the top of Montalto, the highest mountain in Aspromonte with its 1,956m peak. From the plain of Carmelia we will walk through a wonderful beech and white fir forest. It is really interesting to observe, the closer we get to the summit of the mountain, how these trees have been modified by the snow and wind from a majestic specimen into crippled bushes. The view from the top is unique as we will be able to see the Straits of Messina, Mt Etna, the Ionian and Tyrrhenian sea, the Eolian Islands and the southern top of the Apennines. (Duration: about 6.5 hours; altitude: 700m).

In the afternoon we will drive north along the coast with a stop on the way to take a refreshing swim in the sea. Ready for drive to our second accommodation in a B&B in Motta Filocastro. On this day a big party takes place: the whole village is dressed as it would have been in Medieval Times; minstrels, fire-eaters and musicians would be a delightful accompaniment to the evening.
